Spring Duo – Ranunculus & Freesia

Botanical Name: Ranunculus asiaticus & Freesia × hybrida

Position: Full sun to part shade. Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds.

Climate: Cool, temperate, Mediterranean and dry climates. Tolerates light frost.

Planting Time: Autumn to early winter.

Watering: Water thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist during active growth and flowering. Avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering as foliage dies back and keep relatively dry during dormancy.

Flowering Time: Late winter to spring.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser or blood and bone at planting. Feed again when growth appears and after flowering.

Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soils.

Pests: Snails and slugs. Good drainage helps prevent corm rot.

Growing Tips: Soak ranunculus corms for 2–3 hours before planting, then plant with the claw-like points facing down. Plant freesia corms with the pointed end facing upwards. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
