Lachenalia — Produces spikes of colourful, bell-shaped flowers in shades of blue, mauve, yellow, cream and white above attractive strap-like foliage. Ideal for pots, rockeries, borders and mass plantings, bringing vibrant colour to the late winter and spring garden.

Position: Full sun to part shade in a sheltered position.

Climate: Suitable for cool, temperate, Mediterranean and dry climates. Not recommended for tropical regions. Tolerates light frost to around 0°C.

Planting Time: Autumn.

Watering: Water thoroughly after planting, then keep soil relatively dry until shoots emerge. Keep soil lightly moist while plants are actively growing and flowering. Reduce watering after flowering and keep bulbs relatively dry during dormancy.

Flowering Time: Late winter to spring.

Fertilising: Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Apply a balanced fertiliser or blood and bone when growth appears and again after flowering to replenish bulbs for the following season.

Soil: Well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils, as bulbs may rot in wet conditions.

Pests: Generally free from pests and diseases when grown in well-drained conditions.

Growing Tips: Plant bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards and cover with 2–5 cm of soil. Lachenalias prefer cool, moist winters and dry summers. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering so bulbs can store energy for next season. Bulbs can remain undisturbed for many years and often perform best when planted in groups.
