Jonquil Silverchimes
Botanical name - Narcissus jonquila
Jonquils feature multiple dainty blooms on single stems and have a strong fragrance. Jonquils flower better in warmer climates than daffodils and are extremely hardy. Come in miniature, single and double varieties. Jonquils are ideal in pots and make excellent long lasting cut flowers. With a cluster of small flowers on top of each stem they make a big impact in both colour and fragrance.
Position - Grows best in full sun to part shade.
Climate - Suitable for all climates
Planting time - Autumn to Winter.
Watering - After planting give them a thorough watering, but do not water again until the foliage starts to appear. Natural rainfall should be sufficient. Keep bulbs moist during dry spells in autumn and late spring. Do not water when dormant.
Flowering time - Spring
Fertilising - Fertilise lightly when planting and after flowering. Use a commercial bulb fertiliser.
Soil - Well-drained soil.
Pests - Bait snails regularly as they like to chew the blooms of Jonquils.
Growing Tips - After about 3-4 years bulbs should be lifted, cleaned and stored as clumps tend to become congested and will produce poorer quality flowers. In warmer climates plant up to double the recommended depth. They will generally only flower from round mature bulbs. If you plant them too shallow they are prone to ‘split up’ into side bulbs and won’t flower until they reach maturity. Deeper planted bulbs appear to stay healthier, and split less frequently, thus producing more flowers for many years.
