Crocus Saffron
Botanical name - Crocus sativus
Produces lilac flowers with dark purple ‘veins’ on the petals in autumn. Saffron is one of the most expensive spice in the world. The orange red saffron stigmas are highly prized and used in cooking and as a dye. The crocus threads (or stamins) are the only edible part of the bulb.
Position - Full sun/part shade
Climate - Suitable for Mediterranean and temperate/dry climates.
Planting time - Late Summer.
Watering - For best results, plants like regular watering while in flower.
Flowering time - Late Autumn.
Fertilising - Use only a small amount of Blood and Bone with a complete fertiliser at planting time and top dress annually in summer.
Soil - Soil must be well drained. Poor soil can be improved by digging in organic matter before planting.
Growing Tips - Needs to be harvested with a pair of tweezers as soon as flowers open. Allow threads to dry in a shaded well ventilated area for 4 to 5 days then store in an airtight container.
