Ornithogalum Chincherinchee
Botanical name - Ornithogalum thyrsoides
Large cones of tightly packed white blooms on tall straight stems. Perfect for cut flowers.
Position - Grows best in full sun.
Climate - Dislikes sub-tropical and tropical. Can withstand -5°C temperatures.
Planting time - Autumn to Winter.
Watering - Chincherinchee is drought hardy once established but will benefit from an occasional deep watering during the growing season. Flowering time - Spring
Fertilising - Although fertilising is not essential it would certainly be beneficial to apply a complete fertiliser during the growth period, this will encourage the plant to produce better blooms.
Soil - Prefers a well-drained but not very rich soil.
Pests - Generally a trouble free bulb, however it is susceptible to a fungal disease, which may occur during cool, showery weather. A fungicide may be required in this case.
Growing Tips - Cut spent flower stems at ground level. Makes an ideal cut flower that will last for weeks. Bulbs can be left undisturbed for many years, divide only when very crowded.
