Botanical name - Anemone coronaria
Anemones have wonderful rich and bright colours and are known as a carefree bulb. Anemones are hard to beat as a cut flower, their compact growth habits and dainty blooms bring the cottage garden feel to your garden. They prefer to be massed in a sunny position. Extremely hardy – can handle all conditions.
Position - Grows best in full sun or part shade.
Climate - Suitable for arid, temperate and mediterranean climates. Plant up to double the recommended depth in warm climates. Need protection from strong winds.
Planting time - Autumn to Winter.
Watering - Water well after planting, then weekly until leaves appear. Once growing, only water to supplement rainfall in dry areas. Over watering will rot bulbs.
Flowering time - Late Winter to Spring
Fertilising - Light organic or chemical fertiliser at planting time. Liquid fertilise after 10 weeks.
Soil - Well-drained soil.
Pests - Bait snails when buds appear.
Growing Tips - To kick start the growing process, soak the bulbs in a bowl of water for about an hour before planting. Point of bulb faces down. Best treated as annual or bi-annuals. New bulbs must be replanted every 1 to 2 years.
